About 40s Woman and Beyond
Women do not want to disappear into oblivion when they turn 50. This is true of the women I know and work with, and myself. Actually at this age women have navigated years of a career, life, stresses and want to use their wisdom and experience to develop further as well as support their younger colleagues. Companies who realise this and act accordingly this will not only be able to retain this part of their cohort - the fastest growing group in the workforce (HoC report 2022) - but also “the likelihood of diverse companies outperforming industry peers on profitability has increased significantly.” (McKinsey.com - Diversity Wins) Companies who want to retain the experience, knowledge and wisdom of this valuable segment of their workforce, as well as support the younger women coming up behind, need to provide the education to enable this group to feel supported. Companies I have worked with have fed back feeling "listened to" and "valued" simply by attending a 4 week course explaining the facts and hacks on perimenopause. In addition, education is needed for everyone - regardless of gender or position. The government sponsored Hampton-Alexander review included interviews with male executives to understand why they thought there was a lack of female representation at a senior level. Three of the top 10 answers were that midlife women were not up for it, not able to do it, or not available! Education for all the workforce is needed so that understanding, empathy and support can grow. Having run a number of courses for men and women within organisations, the realisation that it's not just a hot flush, (and what even is a hot flush) has helped women feel understood a little more. Ultimately women will still get the job done but flexibility may be key.
