About 79 Exons

79 Exons was established after our son was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) which is a progressive muscle disorder where the muscles are unable to regenerate correctly. Currently, there is no cure for DMD, and the only way to slow the progression of this condition is by steroid use. We aim to help families with children who have DMD, in as many practical ways as we can; by assisting with bills and other expenditures; by providing support in the form of meals, annual subscriptions and utility payment assistance; by providing food hampers and gifts on special occasions; by organising family gatherings at major events over the year, and assisting with the purchase and/or loan of assistive technology. We are always seeking to expand this list, so if you have ideas on how we may help families, please get in touch. We aim to educate the community by raising awareness of DMD. We have discovered, since our journey, that DMD is a very unknown condition. Rarely, have people who are not directly effected by it, heard of it. It is our desire to see this change. This devastating and life-limiting condition, while rare, needs to be recognised by more than those who have it and their immediate families. Without community help, finding a cure will be so much more difficult, so we are going to do our part by raising awareness of DMD as much as we can. If you'd like to help, a simple share or repost will go a long way to spread the word. We aim to find ways to fund research into this illness. We have a vision to see a state-of-the-art Muscular Dystrophy research facility established in South Australia. I the meantime, we will donate as much as we can to already established researchers so that they can continue to work towards a cure. Steroids, the only way of slowing the progression of this condition, are only a token effort. Sadly at the moment, there is only one outcome for DMD, however, we will hold hope for a cure and celebrate when one is found. Thank you.
