About A Healthier WE

Our organizing principle: “In these times, when ‘I’ is replaced with ‘We’, even illness becomes wellness.” This belief is at the heart of A Healthier WE (AHW) — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded to advance public health by addressing the complex, interdependent challenges that shape the well-being of people and communities across the United States. Inspired by a series of Rural West Conferences hosted by Stanford’s Bill Lane Center for the American West, the organization emerged from the recognition that many of the most persistent public health issues—whether rural or urban, local or national—are deeply interconnected and cannot be solved in isolation. Founded by Phil Polakoff, MD, MEnvSc, MPH, Consulting Professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine, AHW is guided by the principle that transformation begins when we move from individual silos to collective solutions. Drawing on deep expertise in health systems, policy, and community engagement, AHW is uniquely positioned to convene and support a diverse range of stakeholders. Its mission is to foster interactive, interdependent, and interconnected approaches to public health—bridging sectors, disciplines, and geographies to build a healthier future for all. This commitment is fully realized in the newly released book, Building the Healthy America Ecosystem, which outlines a bold and practical framework for aligning efforts across eight critical sectors—Healthcare, Technology, Education, Housing, Economy, Environment, Energy, and Transportation. It serves as both a call to action and a strategic guide for those ready to reimagine public health as a shared responsibility and a national imperative. A Healthier WE stands at the forefront of a growing movement—one that recognizes the urgency and the opportunity to build a truly healthy America.
