About Aboriginal Health and Wellness Centre of Winnipeg
The Aboriginal Health and Wellness Centre of Winnipeg, Inc. (AHWC) is an agent of change and a leader in the holistic way it approaches the health and wellbeing of the Constituents who use its services, as well as the Staff who run these. This non-profit organization is the only Indigenous community health organization in the province of Manitoba that offers this level of comprehensive, trauma-informed, wrap-around care, including: Head Start, housing programs, parenting programs, a men’s healing program, a program that supports residential school survivors and their families, a primary care clinic, and more. Its mission, vision, and values describe a deep commitment to blending and balancing traditional and contemporary ways of knowing and learning, providing resources to the Aboriginal population of Winnipeg, and rooting this all within the concepts of the Medicine Wheel. The work is unique, challenging, and rewarding. It is heart-work in action. We approach our work from an indigenous worldview that understands that an individual member’s wellness reflects our community’s wellness and that our well-being as individuals and as a community is connected to all people and all things, based on the medicine wheel teachings. OUR VALUES We believe that Indigenous peoples have the right to place-based services and an inherent right to our own health and wellness practices, as stated in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. We believe that all people have inherent value and worth that should be honoured. WHO WE SERVE We serve Winnipeg’s Indigenous community and refer to the individuals and families who use our services as ‘Constituents’ (CSTs). The term constituent embodies the notion that community members have a ‘vote’ or ‘say’ in the services we provide. Since its inception, our agency has continued to grow its service care programming based on the needs identified by constituents.
