About Abu Dhabi City Municipality
Abu Dhabi City Municipality has been a key driver of the emirate’s development since its founding in 1962, guided by the vision of the wise leadership. It played a vital role in infrastructure, urban planning, and sustainability. In 1969, an Amiri Decree formed Abu Dhabi’s first Municipal Council. The Municipality’s responsibilities expanded to include public services, roads, lighting, sewage, afforestation, and markets. In 2005, it merged with other municipal and public works entities under the Department of Municipalities and Agriculture. In 2007, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may he rest in peace) established the Department of Municipal Affairs, overseeing Abu Dhabi City, Al Ain, and the Western Region. In 2016, the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) was formed, becoming the main authority over all municipalities. In 2017, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan was appointed Chairman of the Executive Council, and municipal planning was unified under the Department of Urban Planning and Municipalities. By 2019, the current DMT was fully established, integrating municipal and transport sectors under one authority for urban planning, infrastructure, and mobility. The Municipality continues to lead infrastructure and community-focused projects, supporting sustainable development. It is also a founding member of the General Secretariat of UAE Municipalities and a member of regional municipal organizations.
