About Access to Media Education Society
Founded in 1996, AMES is a registered charity committed to using digital media, creative facilitation, and peer education to engage marginalized youth in personally and socially transformative storytelling practices. We focus on creating equity-oriented, youth-centered spaces that foster critical dialogue and personal growth. Our programs are designed to empower emerging creative changemakers, providing them with unique opportunities to develop their skills through media-making intensives and school-based outreach. Our initiatives are grounded in anti-oppression principles and rooted in a deep belief in the value of self-representation, self-advocacy, and intersectional equity. The life force of our programming stems from forging creative pathways to individual and collective liberation and education. AMES lives on the shared, asserted, and unsurrendered traditional territories of the Penelakut people and other Hul’quim’in’um and SENĆOŦEN-speaking Nations with rights and responsibilities in and around the place that’s come to be known as Galiano Island. Many of our projects collaborators, and participants hail from the stolen and unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) nations, colonially known as Vancouver.
