About Adaptive Sports Program New Mexico
The mission of the Adaptive Sports Program New Mexico (ASPNM) is to enhance the lives of children and adults with disabilities through recreation. Each year, ASPNM provides the opportunities for 225+ athletes with disabilities to explore their potential through adaptive skiing, snowboarding, watersports, rock climbing, and more. An incredible 100% of participants report feeling a greater sense of self-confidence, empowerment, and improved physical and mental well-being. ASPNM, which offers many programs at no cost to disabled military veterans and public school students, delivers over 1,000 adaptive lessons and transformative experiences each year. These programs are made possible through the dedication of more than 250 volunteers, whose efforts create life-changing moments for athletes and themselves alike. One volunteer shares: "I work in a hospital all day where we put such an emphasis on what people shouldn't do, and it was so refreshing to be able to work with the athletes in a space where they could be as free as they wanted to be. I didn't realize until this experience how the experiences I take for granted mean so much to people who might not always be able to participate in them. The purest joy I saw on the mountain this season was watching someone who can't walk show me how he flies."
