About Advocacy Through Art & Sciences Association
The Advocacy Through Art and Sciences Association (ATASA) is a student-led environmental initiative based at the University of Ottawa and supported by a network of students, alumni, and researchers from across Ontario. Founded by Kyle Edward Kuthe, a current MSc Graduate Student in Geography and remote sensing, ATAAS works at the intersection of scientific research, policy analysis, and creative expression to promote conservation, ecological justice, scientific communication and environmental education. As President, Kyle leads a team of interdisciplinary students and early-career professionals who bring together backgrounds in geography, sustainability, green building, archaeology, and visual communication. Vice Co-Presidents Ariane Blouin and Maryann A. work by the President's side to help delegate and coordinate research campaigns, outreach initiatives, and collaborative writing projects focused on pressing ecological issues. Together, ATAAS members advocate for sustainable development practices, Indigenous-led land stewardship, and the protection of ecologically and historically significant landscapes across Canada. Our work includes satellite-based deforestation analysis, soil analysis and fieldwork, GPS land surveying, policy briefs, field reports, artistic communication, sustainable tourism advocacy and more. Projects to date have focused on the David Dunlap Observatory forest degradation in Richmond Hill, and related Canadian forest issues, such as Indigenous-led restoration following wildfires in Jasper National Park. ATAAS maintains an open call for students and community members to contribute their work to our platforms, including our social media accounts, blog and emailed monthly Nature’s News.
