About Afghanistan World Foundation

The Afghanistan World Foundation is an organization whose action programs are based on high priority survival needs in Afghanistan. Beginning in 1979, after fleeing to the United States during the Soviet Union invasion in Afghanistan, Sonia Nassery Cole has spent thirty years of unending commitment to the suppressed Afghan population and the reconstruction of a new, liberated Afghanistan. By the early 1990’s, Sonia had raised millions of dollars to aid her devastated country and the millions of Afghans displaced in crowded camps in those countries bordering Afghanistan. In 2002, in the wake of the U.S. and coalition response to the September 11th tragedy, Ms. Sonia Nassery Cole founded the Afghanistan World Foundation (“AWF”) of which she was elected Chairman and CEO. The AWF is dedicated to providing multilevel broad-based support at the grass roots level pursuant to the Afghan National Development Framework mandate and to increasing public awareness by spotlighting these critical needs and on developing effective solutions. AWF seeks to actively engage public and private organizations and individuals, along with government ministries and the international aid community to meet the critical humanitarian needs and assist in the reconstruction of Afghanistan.
