About AFL Japan

1986年設立後、2004年に正式にAFL傘下となり、オーストラリアンフットボールの普及促進とともに、オーストラリアと日本のスポーツ・文化交流に貢献することを目標に活動しています。日本に初めてオーストラリアンフットボールが来たのは1986年。当時オーストラリアンフットボールのプロリーグはまだ VFL (Victorian Football League) と呼ばれており、ビクトリア州以外にも本拠地を置くプロクラブが増え始め AFL (Australian Football League)へと名称を変える前の事です。その年のシーズンに優勝し、当時全盛を迎えていた AFL クラブ Hawthorn Hawks と Carlton Blues を横浜スタジアムに迎え、25,000人の観客を集めて試合が行われました。この時に現在の AFL Japan の前身となる JAFA (Japan Australian Football Association) が誕生しました。その後2004年には AFL の傘下に入り、正式名称を日本オーストラリアンフットボール協会と定め、略称を JAFL (Japan Australian Football League) へと改名。2011年には法人格を取得し協会の正式名称を一般社団法人日本オーストラリアンフットボール協、略称を AFL Japan へと改名しました。現在、日本オーストラリアンフットボール協会は、国内リーグの運営、オーストラリアンフットボール普及活動、日本代表チーム海外派遣などの活動を精力的に行っています。
