About African Caribbean Medical Society Edinburgh
Welcome to the University of Edinburgh’s African Caribbean Medical Society (ACMS)! 🌍🩺🧬 ACMS is a society for all Black heritage students enrolled in medicine, allied healthcare courses, and the medical sciences at the University of Edinburgh (UoE). A space designed to address and support the unique needs of the African and Caribbean student population in this field has been missing at UoE, and ACMS is committed to filling this gap; for us, by us. Our core aims are: ⭐️To foster a strong and fulfilling sense of community, providing opportunities for Black heritage students within the healthcare field to connect. ⭐️To support the academic, mental, and social well-being of Black heritage healthcare students and kickstart student-led change on our experiences through the University of Edinburgh. ⭐️To equip Black heritage students within these fields with the knowledge, resources, opportunities to up-skill (for example, mentorship and workshops) and the professional network to enhance career prospects. ⭐️To advocate for African and Caribbean health. We aim to approach our understanding of health and illness from a decolonial lens, including education on health disparities and culturally relevant healthcare practices. We want to be healthcare leaders equipped to serve and care for our diverse communities. ⭐️To inspire and support upcoming generations of Black heritage students by being a visual representation of their aspirations and displaying that there is a community for them at the University of Edinburgh.
