About AIA Tennessee

Driving Positive Change through the Power of Design. We are the professional association for architects in Tennessee. AIA Tennessee responds to the needs of our 1,500+ members through new programs, policies and people. Our strength comes from the active involvement of all our members, whether practicing in small, mid-sized or large offices; or working in a university, government or industry. The diversity of personalities and activities presents an opportunity for enriching experiences. AIA Tennessee was founded to further the profession of architecture in Tennessee, with particular emphasis on educating the Tennessee General Assembly and other components of state government to the significant roles architects play in determining our state’s quality of life. Equally important, AIA Tennessee advocates for technical and business concerns of practicing architects, with a goal of creating a sound and equitable environment in which to practice. Through the years, AIA Tennessee has passed such legislation as the Architectural/Engineering Licensing Law with its many revisions, extending lien rights to architects and engineers, one of the best statutes of limitations in the country, and numerous laws updating and standardizing codes and policies related to the building industry. In any given two year legislative session, as many as 50 bills are introduced which would adversely affect the practice environment in Tennessee. AIA Tennessee serves as a liaison to the Building Commission, State Licensing Board, Department of Health and Environment, Department of Insurance, Fire Marshal’s Office, State Architect’s Office, Tennessee Housing Development Agency and other related agencies. Its goal is to promote awareness of architecture and to represent its membership’s interests in building codes and construction related matters with these agencies.
