Conquer your needle fear with our AI driven smartphone game! Almost nobody enjoys injections or blood draws. However, for some people the anxiety for needles results in serious trouble. In the Netherlands alone, about 6 million people suffer from fear of needles. Almost 30% of patients with needle fear have worse health outcomes due to failed medical procedures and healthcare avoidance. People with needle fear often experience so-called vasovagal reactions including nausea, dizziness, lightheadedness, and even fainting. These vasovagal reactions then only reinforce a patient's anxiety severely. Knowledge in state-of-the-art AI meets hands-on experience with venipunctures! Researchers from the Cognitive Science & Artificial Intelligence department are collaborating with Sanquin to develop an AI driven serious game for smartphones that will help patients conquer needle fear. The only thing you have to do is to solve puzzles by coloring them in with your finger. The catch? The better you manage to control your fear, the easier this will be.
