About Airdrie Food Bank (Alberta)
History 1980's The Airdrie Food Bank was established in March 1984 when local churches signaled a critical need. A member of each church was recruited to the board. Donations of food and money came from the congregations to fill hampers. The Anglican Church provided a room for the Food Bank with storage in various locations. 1990's In 1995, as demand increased (about 20 hampers/month), Family Services could no longer monitor the calls, but offered a phone, a computer and space in their office for Food Bank use. The Food Bank hired a coordinator to process client calls two mornings a week, Mondays and Thursdays, and to arrange for hampers to be filled by volunteers the next day. 2000's In 2006, the space we were using in the Regional Health Building was needed for others uses. The Airdrie Food Bank began a campaign to look for a new location. The City offered to lease the Food Bank a piece of land. With the help of many volunteers, including particularly Martin Durocher, who oversaw the project, we were able to purchase a mobile home, modify it to meet commercial standards, move and renovate a building donated by the Ag building (for the warehouse) and set up shop. Our Grand Opening was held in March 2007. 2010's For years we had been in urgent need of additional space to continue to meet the growing needs of those struggling in our community. With the support of our community, we moved into our new purpose-built facility in August 2014. In 2016 we expanded our services to include skill building programs through our Community Kitchen.
