“Flooding and extreme weather events which damage assets and disrupt business operations pose the greatest risk now and in the future.” (UK Climate Change Risk Assessment, 2017) The Aire Resilience Company (ARC) is building long-term climate resilience across the Aire Valley, in particular to reduce future flood risk for Leeds and the Aire Valley using nature-based solutions. The Project, a collaboration between the Rivers Trust, Leeds City Council, Environment Agency and Aire Rivers Trust is working closely with Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and White Rose Forest, both key local delivery partners, to mitigate predicted impacts of climate change and reduce the risks of flooding to businesses and communities along the river Aire and into Leeds City Centre. ARC is built around a sustainable business model, blending public and private funding to achieve a sustainable means of delivering, and then maintaining nature positive natural flood management (NFM) measures throughout the Aire valley. By working with businesses of all sizes and sectors, ARC will create a robust consortium that shares equally in the benefits generated. These extend beyond the reduction of flood risk, promoting wider business continuity through protection to supply chains and infrastructure alongside the ecological benefits of improved habitat, biodiversity and water quality brought by working with natural processes. Businesses will play a crucial role in enabling this process to operate through collectively providing the funding to maintain the works whilst benefiting from the increased assurance against climate change influenced flooding and the ESG and CSR aligned ecosystem benefits generated through working in a nature based and way.
