It's a matter of life and death, with someone losing their battle with an eating disorder every 52 minutes. It is time for Alabamians to join the movement to fight these deadly conditions. Our initiative aims to unite individuals, families, healthcare professionals, community leaders, and national organizations to collaborate in our mission to raise awareness, provide resources, and advocate for individuals grappling with eating disorders across Alabama and beyond. The primary goals of Alabama's pioneering eating disorder advocacy group include: 1. Raising Awareness: Our mission is to increase public awareness of eating disorders, dispel stigma, and promote early intervention and treatment. 2. Support and Education: We provide a platform for individuals, families, and friends to access crucial information, resources, and support, assisting them in navigating the challenges posed by eating disorders. 3. Advocacy for Change: We are resolute in our commitment to champion policy changes and improved access to treatment for those affected by eating disorders within the state. The launch is a historic occasion. Eating disorders have one of the highest mortality rates among mental health conditions, rivaling the opioid crisis. Hospitalizations for children under the age of 12 have risen by over 100% in recent years, underscoring the urgency of our mission. Alabama Eating Disorders Coalition is dedicated to advocating for individuals with co-occurring issues and conditions like intellectual and developmental disabilities, substance use disorders, depression, anxiety, and those who have experienced trauma. These factors are often linked to the development of eating disorders.
