About Alabama National Fair
A Tradition of Community and Celebration The Alabama National Fair has deep roots in Montgomery, tracing its legacy back to 1854 when the Alabama State Agricultural Society hosted the region’s first fairs along the banks of the Alabama River. Though those early fairs faded by the 1930s, a spark was reignited in 1954 when a Montgomery Kiwanian saw the potential of the newly built Garrett Coliseum. With just $500 borrowed from the Kiwanis Club treasury, a group of dedicated volunteers launched what would become a beloved community tradition. That first fair was a resounding success, earning over $20,000 and establishing the foundation for decades of service and celebration. Since then, the Fair has grown in scope and impact—changing names from the South Alabama Fair to the Alabama National Fair in 1997 to reflect its regional influence. Operated by the Kiwanis Club of Montgomery, it remains an independent, self-sustaining nonprofit dedicated to supporting youth, agriculture, the arts, and the spirit of Alabama. Each October, nearly every Kiwanian—and their families—roll up their sleeves to bring the Fair to life. Proceeds support organizations like Boys and Girls Clubs, Camp ASCCA, Children’s Harbor, Montgomery Area Food Bank, and many more. At its heart, the Alabama National Fair is more than rides and funnel cakes—it’s a celebration of community, culture, and giving back.
