Williams spent the preceding 40 years of his career in downtown Atlanta, most recently serving as president of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks and president of Philips Arena. As Atlanta Hawks president, Williams had oversight of the franchise’s business operations. As president of Philips Arena, he oversaw all bookings and operations as well as the venue’s in-house concert and entertainment promotions company. Williams was a member of the executive committee to oversee the design and construction of Philips Arena which opened its doors in 1999. Previously, he was a 22-year employee of The Omni Coliseum and the Atlanta Hawks. He was The Omni’s president beginning in 1994 until it was imploded in 1997.
