The building industry is one that has been resistant to innovation. We have been building with sticks for centuries. Due to the limited options in building materials and methods, the cost of both has constantly increased. This is causing inventory constraints, shoddy construction, and home ownership to be further out of reach for more populations. The most significant challenges for builders are high cost of materials (30% increase in average construction costs for single family homes since 2015), cost of labor, length of project completion (average completion time for a single-family home in 2022 was 13 months), and shortage of skilled labor (85% of builders report labor shortages for stick-frame carpenters). In addition, there is more focus on sustainability in material choices and construction methods, which are limited and even more expensive. Mass-produced building materials rely on carbon-intensive processes (38% of total global emissions are attributed to the construction industry), toxic ingredients, inefficient harvesting methods (only 50% of harvested wood volume is ultimately converted to lumber), and large amounts of waste in the construction process (30% of building materials delivered to a jobsite end up as waste). The industry needs better solutions to address cost, time, waste, inventory, and sustainability. Our technology will positively impact these key pain points important to both builder/developer and homeowner. ALIGN3D has developed additive manufacturing technology compatible with thermosetting wood/bio-resin composites suitable for whole-house printing. Our goal is to build on the proven 3D printed construction methods in the market today and improve the extrusion materials to be bio-based using traditional building inputs. Our process sequesters carbon, uses local waste materials, and results in a printed structure with a familiar wood aesthetic.
