Absorbent hygiene products like diapers are vital for the health and well-being of babies, individuals, and society at large. However, the disposal of these products presents an eco-technological challenge. Disposable diapers are the third-largest single consumer commodity in landfills. They constitute up to 4% of solid waste and take up to 500 years to decompose. Every year, more than 160 million kilos of used baby diapers and incontinence material for adults end up in waste in the Netherlands. Kenya uses about 800 million diapers per year, of which a majority ends up in open landfills, while global consumption stands at an estimated 450 billion diapers annually. Current management methods include pyrolysis and incineration which are energy intensive and emit toxic pollutants like dioxins and furans into the air. Clearly, there is a lack of sustainable technologies to recycle waste diapers yet demand for disposable diapers is rising steadily. The diaper market was predicted to exceed $71 billion in 2022. Additionally, an increase in economic opportunities for mothers globally will result in increased purchases. For these reasons, Alkyl Recycling is determined to provide a viable chemical recycling solution. Through the Alkyl Recycling process, used diapers are broken down into their individual components, including plastic, pulp, and super-absorbent polymers. These materials can then be effectively repurposed into new products, reducing waste, and preserving valuable resources.
