Decarbonizing the built environment. ~ In December 2020, the South African Department of Mineral Resources and Energy released the long-awaited Regulations for the Mandatory Display & Submission of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) for large commercial buildings. Qualifying buildings have until December 2022 to obtain their EPCs! This milestone is a significant driver for energy efficiency and long-term reduction in carbon emissions in South Africa. South Africa has an internationally committed target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050. EPCs is a statement (valid for five years) of the energy performance of a building over the range of “Very Energy Efficient” to “Not Energy Efficient” when assessed against a reference point, and in accordance with SANS 1544:2014. The statement also encourages the owner/tenants to implement recommendations to conserve energy for a better EPC in the future. The legislation applies to public and private buildings of a specific size, classification, and renovation status. Alliance Energy (Pty) Ltd is a SANAS Accredited Inspection Body (EPC0004) to perform laid down procedures in assessing qualifying buildings and issuing EPCs in South Africa, as per the requirements in the above regulations.
