About Alliance for African Women Initiative (AFAWI)
AFAWI is grassroots, Ghanaian Non-Government Organisation which strives to create an environment that enables fair development for vulnerable people in rural and urban settings, particularly women and children. Over the past decade, a series of international agreements have concluded that supporting gender equality is crucial to sustainable national development and global health. Therefore, empowering women is essential. Although encouraging gains have been made towards women's empowerment in Ghana and continue to do so, often the most disadvantaged and marginalised women are left behind including those living with HIV/AIDS, those living in rural areas, living under strong traditional and religious influence, migrants, women with disabilities and those affected by conflict. AFAWI aims to empower women and children economically, politically, and socially to provide a medium for educators and women, youth and community leaders to discuss issues affecting women and children. Through these efforts, we hope to enhance women’s socio-economic opportunities and right to a dignified life, regardless of their background. Additionally, AFAWI supports the commitment made by the international community during the 1990s to achieve universal education in every society of every country. Therefore, much of our work is performed in Northern Ghana, where educational disparities fall short of urban areas, as well as a greater gap between girls' and boys' achievement in school.
