About Almaty Air Initiative

Everyone has the right to health and clean air, regardless of their social status, income level, or nationality. The ability to breathe clean air and maintain one's health is a fundamental human right, not contingent on social standing. The idea that wealthier individuals live in areas with cleaner air, while poorer communities endure more pollution, is fundamentally unjust. Almaty currently exemplifies this breach in environmental justice. For many of its residents, clean air is still a privilege rather than a universal right, severely impacting the health of numerous people, including children. Moreover, air pollution is detrimentally affecting the city’s economic growth. Almaty is losing ground in the global competition for human resources due to these environmental issues, which discourage both new talent and investment, and drive many capable citizens to relocate. Embracing modern technologies, science, and the arts, along with engaging civil society, the media, thought leaders, and attracting experts and sponsors, are essential. Additionally, a productive dialogue with government officials can significantly purify Almaty’s air in the near future. Our strategy to enhance air quality in Almaty includes the phased implementation of effective technological solutions; raising awareness among residents about the problem, its causes, and solutions to shift attitudes and behaviors; and collaborating with national and municipal authorities. By adopting new and leveraging existing, proven approaches based on international experience and empirical data, we can address substantial issues not only in other Kazakh cities but globally. Our goal is to swiftly transform Almaty into a city that is both comfortable and attractive for residents, where every child grows up healthy, and everyone lives and works without risking their health.
