About Alter Exploration

Alter crafts challenging, custom, invitation- and application-only cycling and trail running trips that create opportunities for both physical and mental evolution. At the end of each day, you will be preoccupied as much by the transformative experience as by the satisfaction of exhaustion. The name Alter has a double meaning. First, our trips are meant to be challenging—challenge yourself enough and you stand a good chance of altering your character, in small but significant ways. Alter. Second, the trips are intended to be all-terrain tours on alternative routes. Alter. And then there’s Exploration. This won’t be a vacation so much as an exploration of you and the destination—reach a greater understanding of your physical and mental capabilities, while simultaneously experiencing a stunning landscape. Exploration like this reminds us that the best experiences are earned, not given. Though they may carry us through dark forests or over hardscrabble climbs, such journeys produce memories that never fade. They are best suited to those who can laugh at an absurd twist of fate, aren’t perturbed by 20 percent gradients, and, no matter the circumstances, wouldn’t think twice about turning back. Alter Exploration is a creation of Chris Case, a longtime endurance athlete and former cycling journalist, who has spent much of his life creating opportunities to explore and transform on bike, on foot, and in the outdoors around the world.
