About Alwaagah Institute for the Deaf
AL-Waagah Institute for the Deaf was established in 1995 to try and fill the gaps that are left in the development and support needed to help Deaf individuals overcome barriers to achieving their full potential. Currently the Deaf within South Africa has suffered a major injustice due to not being able to study in their chosen language, Sign Language. This is from primary school right through to tertiary institutions. They are not only marginalized within society but more importantly within education. There are no schools in existence that teaches every subject in Sign language. While we have already started on a small scale by offering religious classes in their first language as well as offering Sign Language classes to the broader community, we now need your help to accomplish building and developing a school with Sign Language as the first language of choice.
