FAQs: Waste plants are heated at high temperature and low oxygen (called pyrolysis) to make a special charcoal called biochar. We use simple, low cost, off the shelf pyrolysis ovens that are widely used to make traditional charcoal. We work with many kinds of partners that have waste biomass. All plants absorb CO2 as they grow, so they contain carbon and any plant can be used as a feedstock for biochar. The biochar we make is a permanent store of carbon in stable solid form. Carbon locked up in our biochar will not return to the atmosphere for 900+ years. Turning the plants into biochar prevents the carbon in dead plants from decomposing and returning the carbon they contain to the atmosphere as CO2 (or even worse, Methane). Biochar is very useful for agricultural productivity, improving soil health, increasing soil water holding capacity, and boosting crop yields. Biochar is also used for water filtration, construction materials, etc. Always Carbon always partners.
