About Amarok Society | Start with Mothers
Amarok Society’s vision is that every child in the world grows up free from poverty, exploitation, and violence, and that they have the freedom to direct their own lives - to explore and contribute their full potential to the world. Our mission is to provide access to quality education to the poorest, most vulnerable children in the world in order to achieve our vision. We do this by teaching mothers in urban slums to become neighborhood teachers, thereby providing education to children and transforming the role of oppressed women within their communities. Our Model: We reach children who have no access to a quality education by opening schools for mothers. Through this novel approach to education, each mother we teach then teaches what she’s learned to children in the community, including her own. By teaching mothers to teach children, we are providing lessons in literacy, math, and nutrition, as well as basic health and hygiene. This allows children who would otherwise grow up illiterate to advance to secondary school, where they often graduate and continue on to a university education. We also provide workshops for mothers which teach tools for conflict mitigation, skills like sewing and small business accounting, community outreach through drama, and civic engagement. We encourage and support mothers in tackling social issues which affect their lives. We help elevate the status of mothers within their community so that they may play a role in actively shaping their neighbourhoods. If you teach a mother, she invests that learning back into her community. She'll use her empowerment to stand up for women's rights, children's rights, peace, and equality. She'll use her success to improve life for everyone in the slum.
