American Bottoms Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility was constructed in 1986 and is located in Sauget, Illinois. It is designed to treat an average of 27 million to a maximum of 52 million gallons of wastewater each day. The plant provides preliminary, primary, and secondary treatment for wastewater from the cities of East St. Louis and Cahokia Heights. The plant also provides secondary treatment for all industrial and residential wastewater from the Village of Sauget, which has undergone preliminary and primary treatment at the Physical/Chemical Wastewater Treatment Plant (PCHEM). The PChem Plant uses physical-chemical treatment processes to treat wastewater from local industries and the hauled wastewater station. These processes use physical means, such as skimmers for oil removal, and chemical means, such as lime addition for neutralization, to prepare the wastewater for biological treatment. This process enables American Bottoms to accept hauled wastewaters which are high or low pH, oily, metal-bearing, and more due to the treatment processes and capabilities of the facility.
