About American Kidney Services Inc
Our organization began in 1981 with a quest to help kidney programs by collecting used clothing and household goods. While other charities often focus on rehabilitation, AKS saw an immediate need for direct financial aid among the nearly 26 million sufferers of kidney disease and renal failure. As these patients wait on a kidney transplant list, they are forced to undergo dialysis several times a week. Not only does this take a debilitating toll on their health, but it also disrupts their daily lives to the point where they may not be able to hold down a job, keep up with their rent, or pay their power bill. However, AKS felt that monetary assistance could help them with their general cost of living, thereby increasing their quality of life—all by asking Atlanta area residents like you to donate to charity. Chronic kidney disease (CKD), which affects people of all ages, can result in chronic renal failure, its most significant outcome. More than 26 million Americans suffer from CKD. 16,000 people receive kidney transplants annually. However nearly 80,000 people remain on the kidney transplant list. Conditions that increase your risk of acute kidney failure include: Advanced age Chronic infection Diabetes High blood pressure Heart failure Various blood disorders
