About Among Friends

At Among Friends, we help families and professionals support the sexual health and relationship needs of people with complex disabilities—clearly, confidently, and compassionately. Our mission is to give anyone who cares for someone with cognitive or developmental disabilities the tools to understand social-sexual behaviors, support healthy relationships, and advocate for sexual self-determination. We work with parents, educators, clinicians, and direct support staff to proactively address behaviors in ways that are safe, legal, affirming, and person-centered. Our approach is grounded in human rights, trauma-informed care, and practical strategies that prevent crisis and promote long-term well-being. We believe that: - Sexuality and connection are basic human needs - Safety and dignity go hand in hand - People with disabilities have the right to choice, privacy, and expression - Preventative support is better than reactive restriction Through training, consultation, and program development, we help care teams create real-world, culturally sensitive supports for people navigating relationships, boundaries, and identity. We’re here to improve quality of life, reduce isolation, and help people retain access to housing, education, employment, and inclusion—while honoring their full humanity.
