With more than 40 years of work under its belt, AMURT has established teams in 80 countries to create a network that can meet development and disaster relief needs almost anywhere in the world. In 1985 we broadened our objectives to include long-term development projects. We feel we can play a unique role in helping the disadvantaged overcome the cycle of poverty and take greater control of their lives. For us, development is a human exchange: people exchanging wisdom, knowledge and experience to build a better world. PRINCIPLES - Every human being has the right to fulfil their fundamental needs, which are food, shelter, medical care, clothing and education. The resources of our planet must be used fairly and appropriately in order to guarantee these needs. - Every human being, regardless of race, creed, sex, colour or social status is a member of the human family and should be treated with understanding and respect. - Only by showing respect for women, ensuring their integration and active participation in society's development process, will they find holistic and harmonious growth. Development is a process that maintains a balance between industry and the environment, rural and urban growth, human needs and existing resources. - Development must narrow the gap between rich and poor and offer opportunities to all. - The proper development of each community begins within its social and cultural landscape. We want disadvantaged communities to gain increasing degrees of independence and finally be able to determine their own future.
