About An Open Book Foundation

Since 2010, An Open Book has promoted literacy by bringing children’s authors and illustrators of the highest caliber into over 120 DC-area Title 1 schools and giving books to students and their classroom and school libraries. AOB provides dynamic, high-quality programming in DC-area public and public charter schools to students from pre-K through high school for students furthest from educational justice. After each presentation, we give participating students a copy of the featured title, the author and/or illustrator signs the books while enjoying a short one-on-one conversation with each student, and we donate a set of the author or illustrator's books to the classroom and school libraries. Our programming includes several types of literacy support for students: * Author and Illustrator Visits, including a program to support new and emerging artists of color * Book Distribution * Pre- and Post-Event Extension Activities * Artist and STEM Residences * Little Free Library Network Presentations are as varied and creative as the books’ words and pictures — authors and illustrators have incorporated poetry workshops, bookmaking, collage, mindfulness, and movement into their presentations. An Open Book also follows selected events with in-class extension activities and coordinated post-event extensions with our nonprofit partners.
