His expertise and vast knowledge of the field have allowed him to determine the origin and provenances to numerous previously unknown books. For his exceptional merits and discoveries in the field of manuscripts and books, he was named "Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres" by the Minister of Culture of the French Republic. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by his Alma Mater, the University of Freiburg im Breisgau in 2010.
