APLA 5 is an environmental technology project based in Valencia, focused on solving the growing problem of microplastic contamination in water through an innovative biomimetic filtration system. 🌍 The Problem Current water treatment technologies are unable to effectively remove microplastic particles smaller than 300 microns. These pollutants accumulate in aquatic systems, enter the food chain, and pose significant health and environmental risks. The European Directive 2020/2184 has introduced stricter requirements for drinking water quality, including microplastic removal. However, scalable and eco-friendly solutions that meet these standards are still lacking. 🔬 The Solution APLA 5 has developed a modular filtration system inspired by the natural filtering mechanisms of marine organisms such as sponges and ascidians. It removes up to 95% of microplastics sized 10–300 microns. Unlike traditional membrane-based filters, our system uses biodegradable materials (chitin and natural polysaccharides), includes a self-cleaning mechanism, operates without chemicals, and reduces energy consumption by 63%.
