About Apogee Entertainment
Apogee is the original indie publisher, starting in 1990. We pioneered the release of shareware demos, bypassing retail publishers who had a lock on the industry back then, and helped studios like Id Software and Remedy Entertainment get their start. Apogee founder Scott Miller created this new model and then funded, mentored and published many indie upstarts while releasing a legendary string of global success stories, like Commander Keen, Duke Nukem, Wolfenstein 3D, Rise of the Triad, Shadow Warrior, Max Payne and Prey, earning over a billion dollars commercially. Miller also created the 3D Realms label for Apogee, which was sold to the Embracer Group in 2021. The newly renamed Apogee Entertainment, with founder Scott Miller and longtime partner Terry Nagy at the helm, will empower today’s incredibly talented indie developers, paving the way for their global success with innovative ideas, cutting-edge marketing, and the same fearlessness that changed the industry. Apogee was also responsible for two other award winning games, Descent and Blood. During the development of Descent we sold the rights to Interplay, and during the development of Blood we sold the rights to Monolith Studios. Note that all games released under the 3D Realms label were actually Apogee games, up to and including the release of the original Prey game (2006 release). For a terrific and accurate history of "The Apogee Model" and how it influenced the entire game industry please read Shareware Heroes (Aug 2022) by Richard Moss. "Scott's work in recruiting and managing great teams and building an effective business model was a constant source of inspiration.” — Tim Sweeney, Founder, Epic Games
