About Applied Literacy by Writing to Win

Writing to Win is a research and evidence-based school improvement provider to K-12 public and private schools and homeschool associations since 1986. Founded by professor of language education, Dr. Warren Combs who conducted extensive research on how humans learn language at the University of Minnesota. He saw that all students have the potential to become winners at reading and writing as long as teachers bring reading and writing together in every lesson. In his graduate Language Studies for Teachers course, many teachers apply his teaching with success. Schools and district retained him as literacy coach and Writing to Win was born. The Writing to Win message and practices have touch the lives of more than 1.7 million students in over 700 schools in 10 states since its launch. We follow our founder’s legacy and use systematic writing to engage students to explain what they learn in all subjects. We grow teacher capacity by establishing model classrooms in each school with online or onsite training. Recent definitive research in writing, Writing Next, identifies 11 effective writing practices that blend reading into writing practices.
