About Aquiares Estate Coffee
Aquiares Estate was founded in 1890, it is the largest coffee farm in Costa Rica and has developed to become a diversified agro-industrial company with production in areas such as cacao & chocolate-making, essential oil extraction from local medicinal plants, and of course specialty coffee farming, processing, roasting and exporting. Aquiares has also developed a robust hospitality branch that specializes in experiential tourism, rural connection, boutique farm stays, bespoke adventures and the famous Coffee Festival which takes place every September. Total area covered by the farm is 920 Ha, of which 660 Ha are shade-grown Arabica coffee, and 200 Ha are protected natural forest. Inside the farm, there is a community of 1800 people who share the same past as our company. The community started as homes given to farm workers, but over time, and with great efforts from Alfonso Robelo in the 1990’s, everyone acquitted their own house, and now it is an independent community living inside the farm, with a school founded in 1916 and a church build in 1920. Aquiares is a unique symbiotic model where coffee company and coffee community benefit and help each other to strive for a common future ahead. Aquiares is located high on the slopes of the Turrialba Volcano, on the Eastern side of Costa Rica, facing the Caribbean. It's a fantastic location with a unique micro-climate, which enables it to grow fine coffees which are milled at the Estate's own mill and exported yearly, as early as every November. Aquiares has been Rainforest Alliance certified since 2003, UTZ since 2017, and in 2016 obtained certification from the Costa Rican government as a Carbon Neutral company. On a yearly basis, Aquiares measures all its Carbon emissions and also its removals, commitment to net zero or even negative emissions determines the company's vision in the agro-industrial, conservation, and sustainable hospitality sectors; where Aquiares aims to always be a leader and world reference.
