About Archive of Modern Architecture in Syria

The Archive of Modern Architecture in Syria (AMASyria) is an initiative to archive, document, and share the endangered Syrian architectural experience in the 20th century. This project arose from the dire need to develop the architectural discourse in the country, and to assert the important role of the architectural scene and its intersection with different artistic fields, as part of the larger cultural scene in Syria. Furthermore, it aims to protect this threatened legacy, from circumstances of war, given the severe neglect of resources and lack of thorough documentation, especially after the unfortunate death of many architectural pioneers in Syria. The project's objective is collecting those diverse architectural endeavors, whether designed by Syrian or foreign architects, and digitally archive that knowledge in one reliable and easy-to- reach platform that eases the process of researching, analyzing and criticizing that experience by people of interest. Our goal is to gather all data involving architectural projects and products designed in Syria, or by Syrian architects, whether executed or not; (Architectural documents and drawings, old and recent photographs, architectural competitions, sketches, project description as well as stories and comments, as told by the architect.) in addition, the architects' biography and life stops. Followed by, sorting this data, archiving it, and later on, uploading it digitally on the internet and ensuring its accessibility.
