About ArtMaps
ArtMaps aims to turn outdoor spaces into open-air museums by making public art more visible, accessible, and engaging. Through gamified journeys and interactive experiences, the platform enhances cultural discovery for users while providing cities and institutions with innovative tools to showcase artworks, reach diverse audiences, and foster inclusive cultural engagement. The idea for ArtMaps emerged from three deeply frustrating experiences and the growing realization that public art, despite its potential, often remains invisible or inaccessible. First came the anxiety of missing out, traveling to a new city and unknowingly walking past extraordinary artworks simply because they weren’t documented or signposted. The notion that art could be everywhere, yet hidden in plain sight, felt like a missed opportunity for authentic connection with place and culture. The second frustration was more personal: wanting to share these experiences with my mother, who uses a wheelchair, and finding no information about accessibility. Even when artworks appeared on maps, there was no indication of whether they could be reached by people with reduced mobility, turning moments of potential wonder into moments of exclusion. The third came from trying to share my passion for art with friends who often found museums intimidating or dull. I wanted to reimagine how we experience art, making it playful, social, and immersive. What if discovering art could feel like a challenge, a game, an adventure? Beyond these moments, three years of studying art history, including two years focused on monumental outdoor sculpture, gave me a deeper understanding of both the power and the invisibility of public art. ArtMaps was born from this convergence of personal experience and academic insight, with the goal of reconnecting people to the art that surrounds them, art that deserves to be seen, understood, and enjoyed by all.
