About ASUC Student Legal Clinic
Founded in 1983, the ASUC Student Legal Clinic was established to help educate the Berkeley community about available legal options. Today, we continue with this tradition. The Clinic has proudly served the Berkeley community for over 30 years, providing free and confidential legal research catered to the particular issues our clients are facing. Clients can walk-in or schedule an appointment to discuss their legal questions. Our trained caseworkers provide clientele with fully researched case reports, outlining possible legal options and pertinent information about their rights. In the spring, the Clinic also participates in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to provide eligible students and community members free tax-filing services. All of our caseworkers are IRS-certified tax preparers. The Clinic aims to foster a nurturing environment where caseworkers can interact with peers who share similar interests and hear from a wide range of guest speakers, including Berkeley Law admissions officers, local attorneys, and Cal alumni. LEGAL AREAS: The ASUC Student Legal Clinic does not give legal advice, but rather provides research for legal options. Our caseworkers hear out the legal issues of Berkeley community members and write thorough case reports detailing potential options for recourse. Our services include legal research, attorney/agency referrals, and income tax assistance. The Clinic offers information on legal areas including drug and alcohol violations, landlord/tenant law, contract terms, small claims, tax law, employee rights, immigration law, business law, family law, traffic violations, and more. Caseworkers assist clients one-on-one with their specific legal concerns. The Clinic also hosts larger workshops on highly-demanded topic areas, such as our Tenants' Rights Workshop.
