About Australian Powerchair Football Association
The Australian Powerchair Football Association (APFA) is the national governing body for Powerchair Football in Australia. Our mission is to provide opportunities for people who use powerchairs to access, play, and excel in this fast-paced, tactical team sport while building inclusive communities through participation and competition. Powerchair Football is an adapted form of football (soccer) for powerchair users, using specialised chairs with metal footguards to pass, dribble, and shoot an oversized ball. It is exciting, action-packed, and offers athletes a chance to develop skills, compete, and build lasting friendships on and off the court. APFA supports local clubs across Australia to grow participation and run training sessions and competitions, creating clear pathways for athletes to progress from grassroots to state, national, and international levels. We proudly support the Australian Poweroos, our national team, who placed 6th at the 2023 FIPFA Powerchair Football World Cup in Sydney and are now working towards Argentina 2026 with the goal of reaching the semi-finals. Powerchair Football creates purpose, confidence, and community for athletes and families, but participation often requires support workers and family involvement, making costs higher than many sports. APFA works to reduce barriers through fundraising, sponsorships, and community partnerships to ensure financial limitations do not stop athletes from achieving their goals. Through advocacy and awareness campaigns, APFA is committed to growing the visibility of Powerchair Football in Australia. We work with councils, disability organisations, sports bodies, and sponsors to improve access to facilities, build coaching and referee pathways, and expand volunteer networks to support the sport’s growth. Powerchair Football is more than a sport; it is a platform for inclusion and excellence, shifting perceptions of what athletes with diverse abilities can achieve. As a volunteer-led organisation,
