About Australian Wooden Boat Festival
The Australian Wooden Boat Festival is Tasmania's largest free event and the largest celebration of wooden boats and maritime culture in the Southern Hemisphere. Those who’ve not attended may think it’s a niche event only for devout wooden boat enthusiasts. They’d be wrong. Held every two years on Hobart’s iconic waterfront, the four-day festival offers something for everyone. With a stunning display of wooden vessels—from historic tall ships to classic yachts and traditional fishing boats—Hobart’s historic port comes alive. Visitors are treated to on-water displays, boat tours, engaging talks, exhibitions, workshops, live music, theatre, film, and a vibrant festival tavern. Families can enjoy a dedicated kids’ maritime precinct, while foodies can indulge in the best of Tasmanian cuisine and local beverages. Since its founding in 1994, the AWBF has grown to attract tens of thousands of visitors from Tasmania, the mainland, and overseas, all drawn by the festival’s dynamic blend of maritime heritage and community spirit. In 2023, the event saw over 450 wooden boats, 60,000+ visitations, 350+ volunteers, 100+ exhibitors, and 250+ performers, chefs, speakers, and authors contributing to its success. In 2025, the AWBF launches "The Pacific" as its central theme—showcasing this vast ocean region's cultural and historical significance, featuring content from New Zealand, Hawaii, Tahiti, New Caledonia, Japan, the US West Coast and other Pacific locales. The 2025 Festival will offer an experience that feels both grand in its spectacle and intimate in its sense of community.
