About Auto Stewardship New Zealand
Auto Stewardship New Zealand (ASNZ) is a not-for-profit charitable trust. We aim to accelerate sustainable outcomes for vehicles in Aotearoa by providing best practice product stewardship governance. Each year in Aotearoa it’s estimated more than 150,000 cars are taken off the road. We also replace more than 7 million tyres and 80,000 car bumpers, as well as many other vehicle related parts. Some vehicle materials are recycled or repurposed when they reach their end of life, however outcomes are varied, with a loss of useful resources to landfill. We think New Zealand can do better. With the creation of the Clean Car Programme in 2021, we are not alone in considering New Zealand needs a comprehensive motor vehicle scrappage strategy as older cars become less desirable. To this end, ASNZ trustees have made a commitment to progress ‘whole of vehicle’ stewardship. Regardless of whether we are talking whole of vehicle or just one part, many stakeholders, and the end-of-life issues they face, are the same. Our trustees consider ASNZ to be the ideal Product Stewardship Organisation for any vehicle related stewardship scheme in New Zealand.
