About Avery Biomedical Devices
At Avery Biomedical Devices, we are dedicated to improving the lives of ventilator-dependent patients through the Avery Diaphragm Pacemaker—a clinically proven, cost-effective alternative to mechanical ventilation that promotes natural breathing. The Avery Diaphragm Pacemaker (phrenic nerve stimulator) is indicated for adult and pediatric patients who require chronic ventilatory support due to upper motor neuron respiratory muscle paralysis (RMP) or central alveolar hypoventilation (CAH)—including conditions such as Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome (CCHS)—and whose remaining phrenic nerve, lung, and diaphragm function is sufficient to accommodate electrical stimulation. Typically, these patients have high spinal cord injuries, central hypoventilation, central sleep apnea, or a paralyzed diaphragm of various etiologies, including brainstem lesions or chronic pulmonary disease with ventilatory insufficiency. By stimulating the phrenic nerve, the Avery system enables natural, rhythmic breathing without the need for traditional mechanical ventilation. It offers patients greater mobility, lower infection risk, long-term reliability, and a higher quality of life—all while reducing the cost of care.
