Babieskin and Kind was born not long after my real baby was. At 8 weeks old he had his first eczema flare up. We followed all the medical guidance and used topical steroids, paraffin based emollients and ever type of “reduce itching” skincare available. Absolutely nothing relieved the heartbreaking symptoms my son was experiencing. As a desperate mother, I spent my every waking breath trying to find ways to improve my son’s eczema. I reached out to charities, searched every second online and connected with others in the eczema community. I discovered clothing was an essential part of achieving better skin and through choosing the right fabrics and styles, clothes could help break the itch-scratch-cycle, reduce infection risk and aid the effectiveness of wet wrapping therapy. At first, I changed bedding and nightwear as sleeping was hugely impacted, often with my baby unable to sleep due to unbearable itching and pain keeping him awake. The changes it made using built-in scratch mitts and gentle fabrics like organic cotton, bamboo and silk was significant. My son started to be able to sleep, with less irritation and more comfort. Finally. Using similar ideas, I started to expand with accessories like snoods to reduce itching around the neck and shoulders, hats to protect ears and scalp from wind chill and garments like all in one overall/dungarees and babygrows to protect leg and arm scratching. I started to unravel my son’s triggers, identifying root causes and adapting life to prevent environmental factors causing skin irritation by doing a daily diary. These together were the foundations of how my son’s skin transitioned from 95% covered in severe eczema to 10% mild, within 3 months. Today, my son still has eczema but it is well managed and flare ups are now in the past. I am passionate about helping other families achieve what we have as I know from this experience how mentally and physically challenging baby eczema is, as a parent.
