About Bainbridge Island Medical Reserve Corps (MRC)

an ASPR/HHS sanctioned reserve volunteer unit that strengthens public health, reduces vulnerability, builds resilience, and improves community preparedness, response, and recovery capabilities. We train our medical and support personnel to respond to disasters using an “all hazards” approach but mindful that a regional earthquake is likely to be the most disruptive event we will face. Bainbridge Island is approximately 10 miles long and 3 miles wide with 25,000 year round residents. It is connected to the region by a 2 lane 1950’s era bridge to the West and ferry service to Seattle to the East. In a regional earthquake we anticipate that the island would be cut off from the “mainland” for a period of 3-14 days. There are no hospitals on the island. The Seattle fault bifurcates the island east to west and is predicted to generate severe shaking in the event of slippage along that fault. The most recent severe Seattle Fault earthquake was about 1,100 years ago; The Seattle Fault has been active about three or four times in the past 3,000 years. Deep quakes are the most common large earthquakes that occur in the Puget Sound region. Quakes larger than 6.0Mm occurred in 1909, 1939, 1946, 1949, 1965 and 2001.
