About Balfegó, the sustainable bluefin tuna

Our business group was founded fruit of the efforts of the fifth generation of Balfegó family fishermen. It is currently the foremost company in the study, husbandry and marketing of Mediterranean bluefin tuna, and deploys innovative production and traceability systems. Balfegó bluefin tuna husbandry provides unsurpassed quality by being sustainably managed, from an innovation and traceability perspective. We carry out the annual fishing process with boats equipped with the latest technology, pursuing maximum efficiency and sustainability. Our boats, La Frau and Tío Gel are captained by the presidents of the company, Manel and Pere Vicent Balfegó. Our method of capture is seine netting, enabling mono-species directed fishing for adult bluefin tuna without interrupting their reproductive processes and cycles. ✔ 📍 Our husbandry facilities are located off the coast of L’Ametlla de Mar, where our wild tunas are fed exclusively on blue fish. This allows us to bring fresh bluefin tuna to the market 365 days a year according to individual customer demand and specifications, selecting specimens at the optimal fat level. 💯. The individual extraction method that we use, together with the Japanese technique of ikejime, guarantee a bluefin tuna free of yake -that is, without induced stress-; and immediate gutting after slaughter ensures anisakis-free meat. All of this experience, knowledge and attention to detail provides not only a product of excellent gastronomic value, but also with maximum food safety.
