About Bamboosia Farm

Bamboosia Farm was created with the purpose of bringing new farming models to smallholder farmers in rural Western Kenya. Soil carbon and organic matter concentrations in many Western areas is less than 1%. The clay-based soils are easily compacted, while tropical rains all-but-ensure the remaining fertility is swiftly eroded. For small farms, often is the case that the labor and fertilizer bills can equal, or exceed, the value of a crop. The data on the deleterious effects born by monoculture and annual crop farming is alarming and ultimately unsustainable. Shifting attitudes toward regenerative farming are taking hold; the movement from annual cropping to permaculture practices is emerging. This new approach focuses on growing fixed root crops with little to no tillage of the soil; helping to lower labor inputs, while curbing soil erosion, and begins the process of regenerating soil health. Bamboo is an excellent example of a principal permaculture crop which can yield multiple value-added products, protect and improve the environment, while providing opportunity to apply a sustainable and layered agricultural approach ("polyculture") to the farm/landscape. Utilizing recognized Bamboo varieties as the principal permaculture crop, we are establishing a layered, multi-crop farm where several species of valuable plants and animals thrive in an environment where the farmer can focus on multiple annual harvests, without a tiller or plow!
