Maryland's best oyster. Sustainably raised and responsibly harvested in the heart of the Chesapeake Bay. Barren Island Oysters is using “off-bottom cages,” a new type of aquaculture in Maryland where oysters are placed in cages which sit on the bottom of the bay and are periodically hoisted out of water for hand cleaning, chipping, and sorting before being returned to the water. Our aquaculture techniques preserve local habitat and protect the spawned eggs of many fish and shellfish species.Our aquaculture cages are submerged in shallow water and out of sight, which maintains the natural beauty of the Bay. It is our mission to preserve the Bay and produce the most delicious Maryland oyster.
