About Battelle National Biodefense Institute
The National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center is one of the central elements in the United States’ Biodefense enterprise. It is the only national security-focused biocontainment laboratory and has been operating without interruption at BSL-0 through BSL-4 for more than 12 years. The NBACC houses two independent but complementary science programs: the National Biological Threat Characterization Center (NBTCC) and the National Bioforensic Analysis Center (NBFAC). NBTCC is a DHS entity that performs work for a wide range of partners including DHS, DoD, HHS, the Intelligence Community, and others, and largely focuses on applied research projects aimed at providing its US Government (USG) partners with the information they need to assess the risks associated with biological agents and technologies and develop strategies for countering threats that are identified. NBFAC is an FBI organization that functions as the FBI’s ‘Special Projects’ lab in analyzing evidentiary material that requires biocontainment, as well as a wide range of samples that require advanced scientific methods and/or unique security and safety measures that are not available anywhere else. Battelle National Biodefense Institute (BNBI) is a single purpose non-profit corporation that manages the NBACC as a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) for the Department of Homeland Security.
